She's also well known for her performance on stage, especially for the starring role of Emmie Thibodeaux and the Broadway production Caroline or Change (2004) in which she won the Tony Award Best Musical Featured Performance went to her. And Beneatha Youther, who played the role in the Broadway revival of A Raisin in the Sun (2015) where she received the Tony Award Best Play Featured Performance award was presented to her.
